Fifteen defined terms ยท clause 3

The vocabulary the draft fixes

Clause 3 defines fifteen terms and takes the rest from ISO/IEC 25000. The seven measurement terms carry the arithmetic of the whole draft; the product terms decide what can be measured; the human terms keep the interaction measures tied to people.

RefTermWhat it meansWhy it matters
3.1accessibilityHow far products, systems, services, environments and facilities can be used by people across the widest range of needs, characteristics and capabilities to reach a goal in a stated context.Imported from the human factors standards. It sets the population for the inclusivity measures.
3.2ICT productA product that uses information and communication technology and can be part of an information system. Hardware, software, components and data are examples; people, infrastructure and facilities that are separate from communication and data are not.Decides what can be measured. It is wider than software and narrower than an information system.
3.3measure (noun)A variable to which a value is assigned as the result of measurement, and which can be a base measure, a derived measure or an indicator. The everyday word, defined so that a count and a combined measure can both be called a measure without confusion.
3.4measure (verb)To make a measurement. The act, as distinct from the thing.
3.5measurementThe set of operations whose object is to determine the value of a measure, including assigning a qualitative category where the property is qualitative.A measurement is a procedure, not a number. The procedure can be repeated and checked.
3.6measurement functionThe algorithm or calculation performed to combine two or more quality measure elements. The arithmetic of a quality measure. It is fixed before the data is seen.
3.7productAn artifact that is produced, is quantifiable and is delivered as an end item or a component, and in this document an ICT product that is part of an information system. The entity a measure is taken on. The clause narrows the general definition to ICT products.
3.8quality measureA measure produced by combining at least two quality measure elements through a measurement function. Inherent measures quantify structure; behavioural measures quantify properties seen in use.The unit of reporting. One element alone is not a quality measure.
3.9quality measure elementA measure defined by a property and the measurement method that quantifies it, optionally transformed by a mathematical function. The abbreviation is QME.The building block. Annex B names thirty-one of them.
3.10quality modelA defined set of characteristics and the relationships between them, providing a framework for specifying quality requirements and evaluating quality. The 25010 model is the one this draft measures against.
3.11quality propertyA property of a target entity that is related to a quality measure element and can be quantified by a measurement method. The thing an element counts or times. It can also be used for qualitative feedback.
3.12quality characteristicA category of quality attributes that bears on the quality of an ICT product or information system, and which can be divided into subcharacteristics. The nine headings of clause 6. The definition replaces the older software quality characteristic and widens the scope.
3.13product qualityThe capability of a system or its components to satisfy stated and implied quality needs under specific conditions.Wider than meeting a requirement. The note says users do not consider a system that only satisfies requirements to be high quality.
3.14usabilityHow far a system, product or service can be used by specified users to reach specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a stated context of use.Imported from the human factors standards. It sits inside interaction capability in the 2023 model.
3.15userA person who interacts with a system, product or service, including operators, people who use the output and people who support it.The population for the interaction measures, defined more widely than an operator.

The meanings are paraphrases of the definitions in the free preview. The term names are kept exact. Where the draft takes a definition from another standard, the source is named in the preview and repeated on this page's source list.

Three terms that decide the arithmetic

Quality measure element. A property plus a measurement method, optionally transformed. It is the raw material, and Annex B names thirty-one of them.

Measurement function. The algorithm that combines two or more elements. It is fixed before the data is seen, and a change to it is a new measure.

Quality measure. A measurement function of two or more elements. One count is not a quality measure, however interesting it is.
