What this heading covers
The clause names ISO/IEC 25000, ISO/IEC 25010 and ISO/IEC 25020, and it fixes how an edition is picked: a dated reference pins that edition, and an undated one follows whatever edition is current. All three are undated in the draft, which matters: the model can move under the measurement standard when a new edition of 25010 is published, and the measurement framework can move too. The three are not decoration. 25000 supplies the shared vocabulary, 25010 supplies the characteristics and subcharacteristics that every measure is indexed to, and 25020 supplies the measurement concepts and the way a measure is constructed.
Record position: clause page 2 of 6. The text is public in the free preview.
What the heading asks of a team
25000, the guide
Holds the common terms and the description of the divisions. The draft reproduces the essential definitions, so a reader can work from one document, but the guide remains the reference for terms it does not repeat.
25010, the model
Holds the nine characteristics and their subcharacteristics. Every clause 6 heading is a 25010 subcharacteristic, which is why a change to the model is also a change to the measure set.
25020, the framework
Holds the measurement concepts: quality property, quality measure element, measurement function, quality measure. The draft uses those terms in clause 5 and in Annex B.
What to put in place before publication
- Pin the editions of 25000, 25010 and 25020 that your quality plan cites, and write the edition years into the plan.
- Check whether your measure library is indexed to the 2011 or the 2023 product quality model, because the characteristic names differ between them.
- Keep the three documents, or a licensed route to them, available to the people who run the measurement programme.
- Record in the plan that the references are undated, so a new edition is picked up deliberately rather than by accident.
- Ask a supplier which edition of 25010 its quality measures are built on when it answers a tender.
The test a reviewer asks
- Does every measure in the library name the model edition and the framework it was built with?
- Can the team explain the difference between a quality measure element and a quality measure without reading the definition aloud?
Where teams usually fall short
- A measure library built on the 2011 model and reported beside a 2023 model without a crosswalk, so usability and interaction capability are used as if they were the same heading.
- A contract that cites 25023:2016 and assumes it pins the model edition, when the model is a separate undated reference.
What happens next
Clause 3 sets the fifteen terms the draft uses itself, and points to 25000 for the rest. The glossary page carries all fifteen with the page each one shapes.
