6.10.5 Hazard warning measures

Hazard warning asks whether the product warns users of a hazard in time and in a way they can act on. A measure relates warnings noticed and acted on to the warnings issued or the hazards present.

The free preview lists this heading and its subheadings but not the requirement text. This page states what the heading requires in our words and never invents the wording.

Not legal advice; does not certify. This page states our reading of a public draft, not the standard's wording, and it is not an official interpretation.

What this heading covers

A warning that is displayed and ignored has not worked. The measure therefore has two parts: delivery and effect. Delivery is countable from the product; effect needs a user study or an incident review. The warning should be tested in the conditions where it matters, including a distracted user and a noisy environment. The measure should also record false warnings, because alarm fatigue degrades every later warning.

Record position: family 39 of 40 in clause 6, under 6.10 Safety, which carries 5 families. It is one of the 40 families a programme has to map its measures to, and its elements are listed below. The heading is 6.10.5 in the public contents; the text behind it is not public.

How a measure for this family is built

Count the hazard conditions in which the user noticed and acted on the warning as the numerator over the conditions tested. Report delivery time, notice rate and action rate separately. Record false warnings in the same period.

Our worked formula

Hazard conditions where the user noticed and acted divided by conditions tested, with false warnings counted.

Measure elements that can feed it

Number of hazards, Number of users, Duration

Chosen by us from the thirty-one quality measure elements named in Annex B. The draft does not publish which elements feed hazard warning, so the choice above is a worked example, not the draft's assignment.

What to put in place before publication

  1. Test the warning with users in realistic conditions.
  2. Record false warnings alongside the true ones.

Evidence to keep

KindWhat it looks like
Warning setEach hazard, the warning, its channel and its required action
Effect recordWhether the warning was noticed, understood and acted on

The test a reviewer asks

  • Does the measure cover action, not only display?
  • Are false warnings counted?

Two questions to ask

  • Was the warning tested with users in realistic conditions?
  • Were false warnings counted alongside the true ones?

Where teams usually fall short

  • A warning display test with the product team watching for it.

What the number cannot tell you

It cannot tell you whether the warning would work for a different user group. The notice rate belongs to the people in the study, and a different group may not see the warning at all.

What happens next

Safe integration is the last family: the product inside a larger system, where the boundaries carry risk.

The rules this is built from

Read from the real rules, not invented.

This page is read from the public record for 6.10.5: the heading in the free contents, and where public, the text the preview carries.

The measure set is read from the public contents; the model table is read from the public 25010:2023 model. Where the draft text is not public, the page says so instead of filling the gap.

Nothing here is guessed while you wait. Each page is written from the public record and points to the exact page it came from. Record updated 22 October 2026
