6.6.4 Fault tolerance measures

Fault tolerance asks whether the product keeps operating when a component fails. A measure relates continued operation under injected or observed failure to the failure scenarios tested.

The free preview lists this heading and its subheadings but not the requirement text. This page states what the heading requires in our words and never invents the wording.

Not legal advice; does not certify. This page states our reading of a public draft, not the standard's wording, and it is not an official interpretation.

What this heading covers

The evidence has to be a failure, not a design. A redundant architecture is a claim until a component is stopped and the product keeps working. The scenarios should be the ones the product is designed for, and they should include the failure of a dependency as well as an internal component. The measure should record the effect on users, because a product that continues in a degraded mode may still fail the task.

Record position: family 19 of 40 in clause 6, under 6.6 Reliability, which carries 4 families. It is one of the 40 families a programme has to map its measures to, and its elements are listed below. The heading is 6.6.4 in the public contents; the text behind it is not public.

How a measure for this family is built

Count the failure scenarios in which the stated service continued within the stated degradation as the numerator over the scenarios tested. Name the component, the failure mode and the acceptable degradation. For a stricter measure, record the time to detect and the time to switch over.

Our worked formula

Failure scenarios in which the service continued within the stated degradation divided by the scenarios tested.

Measure elements that can feed it

Number of failures, Number of restarts, Duration

Chosen by us from the thirty-one quality measure elements named in Annex B. The draft does not publish which elements feed fault tolerance, so the choice above is a worked example, not the draft's assignment.

What to put in place before publication

  1. Write the acceptable degradation before injecting the failure.
  2. Include a dependency failure, not only an internal one.

Evidence to keep

KindWhat it looks like
Scenario listEach component failure, its injection method and the expected degradation
ObservationThe user-visible effect, the detection time and the recovery time

The test a reviewer asks

  • Is the evidence an injected or observed failure, not a diagram?
  • Does the measure say what the user experienced?

Two questions to ask

  • Which component failure was injected, and what degradation was acceptable?
  • Was a dependency failure included, or only an internal one?

Where teams usually fall short

  • A failover described in the architecture document and never exercised.

What the number cannot tell you

It cannot tell you how often the failure happens. Tolerance is a property under a scenario, not a probability.

What happens next

Recoverability is the family for what happens after the failure wins.

The rules this is built from

Read from the real rules, not invented.

This page is read from the public record for 6.6.4: the heading in the free contents, and where public, the text the preview carries.

  • Read from the real rules
  • 63 record pages behind it
  • 116 public headings checked

The measure set is read from the public contents; the model table is read from the public 25010:2023 model. Where the draft text is not public, the page says so instead of filling the gap.

Nothing here is guessed while you wait. Each page is written from the public record and points to the exact page it came from. Record updated 22 October 2026
