6.9.4 Installability measures

Installability asks how easily the product can be installed, uninstalled and reinstalled in a stated environment. A measure relates successful installations to the attempts, with time and steps.

The free preview lists this heading and its subheadings but not the requirement text. This page states what the heading requires in our words and never invents the wording.

Not legal advice; does not certify. This page states our reading of a public draft, not the standard's wording, and it is not an official interpretation.

What this heading covers

Installation is a countable event and a common source of support cost. The measure should include the clean environment, the time, the number of steps, the failures and the rollback. An installation guide is not evidence. A product that installs only after manual dependency work has a lower installability than one that installs from a package in one command, and the measure should reflect that difference. Uninstallation and reinstallation belong in the same family because a partial uninstall breaks the next install.

Record position: family 34 of 40 in clause 6, under 6.9 Flexibility, which carries 4 families. It is one of the 40 families a programme has to map its measures to, and its elements are listed below. The heading is 6.9.4 in the public contents; the text behind it is not public.

How a measure for this family is built

Count installations that completed without manual intervention as the numerator over the attempts. Report the median time and the number of steps, and count failures by cause. Include the uninstall and reinstall cycle, because it is where leftover state shows up.

Our worked formula

Installations without manual intervention divided by installation attempts, with median time and step count.

Measure elements that can feed it

Duration, Number of steps, Number of environments

Chosen by us from the thirty-one quality measure elements named in Annex B. The draft does not publish which elements feed installability, so the choice above is a worked example, not the draft's assignment.

What to put in place before publication

  1. Start from a clean environment every time.
  2. Include an uninstall and a reinstall in the test.

Evidence to keep

KindWhat it looks like
EnvironmentThe clean environment and its starting state
Install logThe steps, the time, the failures and the uninstall result

The test a reviewer asks

  • Are the install time and the manual steps recorded?
  • Was the environment clean, and was uninstall tested?

Two questions to ask

  • Was the environment clean before the install?
  • Was an uninstall and a reinstall part of the test?

Where teams usually fall short

  • An install measured on a machine that already had the runtime and the dependencies.

What the number cannot tell you

It cannot tell you whether the installation is secure. A one-command install can still open a port it should not.

What happens next

Replaceability is the family for swapping the product for another, which is the question an acquirer actually asks.

The rules this is built from

Read from the real rules, not invented.

This page is read from the public record for 6.9.4: the heading in the free contents, and where public, the text the preview carries.

  • Read from the real rules
  • 63 record pages behind it
  • 116 public headings checked

The measure set is read from the public contents; the model table is read from the public 25010:2023 model. Where the draft text is not public, the page says so instead of filling the gap.

Nothing here is guessed while you wait. Each page is written from the public record and points to the exact page it came from. Record updated 22 October 2026
